Chios – Mesta

Mesta is one of the other ‘mastihohoria’ (Mastic Villages), like Pyrgi which I already mentioned. In order to protect their Mastic wealth, the villages were all built as compact fortress towns, but I think Mesta is both the most obvious and the most picturesque. All stone, winding narrow streets to confuse potential invaders, and a lovely leafy square in the centre of it all. We stopped here for some lunch, wandered around, got lost, and wandered back to the plateia for coffee (and ice cream..)
